Friends, I consider myself pro-choice, and I am opposed to abortion. Abortion is not about choice, it is about life and death. Abortion results in a death of a child, every time. Abortion chooses death 100% of the time. That doesn’t sound like choice to me.
When I hear well-intentioned pro-life people calling pro-abortion advocates “pro-choice,” I cringe in my soul. Why? Because the issue is about personhood. It is not about choice for the mother, it is about lack of choice for the baby. A baby is a person too. Life comes first. A person who has no life, has no choices to make. If life is snuffed out, how can there be any choice to make? The only reason the pregnant mother has any kind of choices to make, is because her mother first gave her life.
The reality is, abortion eliminates choice, because abortion first steals life. Pro-abortion is pro-death, pro-killing, and anti-choice. Pro-abortion is total opposite of choice. If you really believe a baby is a person, have you considered the inconsistency of connecting the word “choice” to abortion advocacy?
Repeating a Lie
The pro-choice rhetoric is a carefully crafted lie. Now that we see that there’s no choice for the person being killed, we also have to recognize there’s really no choice for the mother as well. God is the author of life. A mother’s womb is the way for each person to be nurtured and brought into the world. The choice for a woman is before pregnancy occurs. Choosing behavior that may lead to pregnancy (sexual intercourse), is a choice for motherhood. Choosing not to have sex, is a choice to avoid motherhood. That’s where the choice in the matter begins and ends.
Once a mother, always a mother. God creates life, not man. The choices that make up a person’s identity are all given by God. God chooses the family to be brought into. God chooses skin color, hair color, eye color, temperaments, etc. These are already determined at conception in the womb, and the mother, nor father, nor doctor, nor any person has a choice in the child’s makeup. A dead baby, caused by abortion, doesn’t take away from the fact that God created that life, and put him or her in the care of his or her mother’s womb.
The pro-choice rhetoric used to identify pro-abortion advocacy is a lie. This lie must be exposed, and replaced with proclaiming the truth. Pro-life people must stop using the term “pro-choice” for advocates of abortion. In equating the word “choice” with abortion advocacy, it is agreeing with a lie. Our words are powerful. Words hold the keys to life and death. Mic-representing the word “choice” in this way perpetuates a culture of death. Our truth-speech has no power if it is mixed with death-speech.
Allow Truth to Win
Using the enemy’s rhetoric concedes defeat before the debate ever begins. If pro-life people wish to share the truth, and see victory for life, they need to first stop speaking the pro-choice lie. Pro-abortion advocates are not pro-choice. They are pro-death, anti-life, and anti-choice.
The real issue lies with how we see God. A worldview based in the Bible sees God as the giver and taker of life. When man does not respect and honor the supremacy of God, he claims to have power to make choices that are, in reality, choices that only God has the authority to make. Abortion is rebelling against God’s order of things. A US Supreme Court decision in 1973 was like a slap in God’s face. Devaluing life in this way opened the door to many more God-dishonoring activities plaguing our society today. Some called this the “slippery slope.” They warned of the dangers of abandoning moral absolutes. Bad choices lead to all sorts of evil.
The way to address society’s ills is with the truth of the Bible. The first step in sharing the truth is to use truthful speech. Truthful speech consists of using words that speak the truth. Speaking of a “right to choose” in the context of abortion, is about as far from the truth as it gets. Life trumps choice. God’s choice trumps man’s choice. Pro God’s choice is the real pro-choice. Don’t allow yourself to get caught in the pro-choice lie.
May God help us speak the truth. May God help us to choose life. May God help us to use life-speech and not pro-choice death-speech to speak into our world. Our world desperately needs the Truth.
And please, please, if you call yourself pro-life, STOP using the term “pro-choice” to describe people who do not hold to a pro-life worldview.
